The American Civil War (1861-65) was one of the most important formative events in the history of the United States. There is a wealth of evidence about the campaigns by the Welsh who were fighitng in them, because there were literally thousands of Welsh-speaking soldiers fighting in the Union (Northern) Army. The resources shared here shed light on their experiences, including vivid descriptions of some of the most famous events of the war. This will be of particular interest to history students at Swansea, Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities undertaking the second year module 'American Civil War'.

Letters from Soldiers serving in the American Civil War in Y Drych, 1863
The Welsh-language newspaper Y Drych served Welsh-American communities, and published a large number of letters from soldiers who were serving in the American Civil War. However, only a small number of the issues from 1863 have survived. This resource contains over 20 of these letters, so that they may be shared with researchers.
Letters from Soldiers serving in the American Civil War in Y Gwladgarwr
The Aberdare nespaper Y Gwladgarwr showed a great interest in the American Civil War. Between 1861 and 1865 it published over 60 letters from soldiers who were serving in the war, describing their experiences and their feelings. Copies of the newspaper are now available via the NLW's Welsh Newspapers resource. This document outlines the content of the letters and provides hyperlinks to them.
Users can browse through the information and if they see a letter which looks interesting, they can click on the link (or cut-and-paste the URL) in order to see a copy.
Letters from Soldiers serving in the American Civil War in Yr Herald Cymraeg
The Caernarfon-based newspaper Yr Herald Cymraeg published a number of letters from soldiers who were serving in the American Civil War. These editions of the newspaper are not available online: however, scans have been made of four letters from 1862. This resource will be of particular interest to university students who are studying the American Civil War. The material is available in a PDF file: for copyright reasons, this will only be available in the first instance to students who have registered for the module 'Rhyfel Cartref America'
