Helen was a supply teacher in primary schools for thirty years, but one day she decided that she wanted to do more to make a difference, so she did her MSc in Social Care and became a Social Worker. The Edward Lhuyd Lecture is an annual presentation on various aspects of academic and contemporary life in Wales and the world. The presentations cover a wide variety of themes including geology, literature, ecology or history. The lecture is organized between the Coleg Cymaeg and the Learned Society of Wales. Note, there were no lectures in 2020 - 2022 due to Covid-19.

This article reports on the findings of initial work undertaken to assess the contribution of service users / carers to social work education at a higher education institution in Wales and also critically discusses the contribution of service users / carers to social work education. The role of service users / carers in this context continues to be unclear. We suggest that this is reflected in the comments of service users / carers, who often talk about the value of their contribution to social work education in terms of personal benefits - often therapeutic – which they experience from taking part. Social work students are enthusiastic about the contribution of service users / carers to their education, and believe it is useful, but they have varying ideas on how and what the contribution of service users / carers could and should be.

An interactive resource that aims to create a context in which social work students can empathise with service users and feel and understand why Welsh-medium services are an important consideration. The module is based on 5 units which focus on:   understanding language need; going under the skin of the bilingual experience; considering the context of the Welsh language – its current condition, its history and the impact on service users; exploring the relationship between language and power, the implications of the More than just words strategy and active offer, and getting ready to practise and work in accordance with More than just words. Ideally, students should work their way through the materials from unit 1 to 5 as discussion and learning builds incrementally from one to the other. However, the units are also self-contained to a large extent and units, or parts of a unit, may be lifted and used in conjunction with other modules or learning materials.
